Divya Chhabra – Health Fair Chair

Divya_Chaabra

Divya was born in Los Angeles and moved to Texas when she was 8, but she is a California girl at heart. She went to college at Northwestern University on the outskirts of Chicago and has become an avid Bears fan. In college she studied psychology and public health. During junior year she studied abroad in Paris, where she learned a lot about government health systems, NGOs, and public health issues, and was able to do a research project at the World Health Organization. It was then that she realized she wanted to pursue public health. That summer, she taught English in Mauritius, and realized that she loved being around kids. After graduating, Divya taught 5th grade at an elementary school on the south side of Chicago. During her time at Betsy Ross Elementary, she was shocked by the health disparities that plagued the community she taught in. Upon coming to Southwestern, Divya hopes to pursue a career (maybe psychiatry) that will allow her to give underserved urban populations like that she taught in more equal access to quality health care and also enable her to implement programs to educate these communities on public health issues.

On a less serious note, Divya loves to dance and was the stunter for a Bollywood dance team in college. You can also find her eating chocolate, watching Friends (it never gets old), or shopping. She loves the color yellow, sleeping in, Christmas time, sunflowers, traveling, looking at pictures of cute baby animals, Disney classics, and big cities. Some of her favorite bands are Passion Pit, Coldplay, and Bon Iver. Her family now lives in Australia, so she has had some quality time with koalas and kangaroos. She is very excited to be on the United To Serve team this year!

Sid Patel – Health Fair Chair

With an obsession for everything Taco Bell, Sid swears by their volcano burrito and dreams about having a Taco Bell franchise of his own one day. He’s even been known to keep a stash of their absolutely delectable Fire Sauce by his bedside. But despite his love for fast food, he knows the value of healthy eating.  As a United To Serve Health Chair, Sid wants to help the community learn about how to prevent hypertension, cardiac disease, or diabetes.  He believes the first way to prevent these diseases is by eating healthy and maintaining an active life style.  Fast food should only be used in moderation and is a lesson that Sid is still actively learning, but wants to help the community learn with him.

Shanup Dalal – Health Fair Chair

Shanup is a test tube baby. We’re not sure what happened in that test tube…just joking! Shanup’s a longhorn for life, and you might hear him yell, “Hook’em horns,” from time to time. He graduated from the University of Texas in 2011, and went to every football game during his time there (as expected of him). He takes great pride in whatever he does, and thrives for any kind of competition, from basketball games to pie-eating contests. Some professors have told Shanup to grow up. They tend to use him as a punching back.  It’s a known fact that they want their punching bag (Shanup) to up his game in medical school. It’s actually a funny story; ask him when you get a chance. Silliness aside, Shanup cares a lot about his family and friends and helping the community in anyway possible. He believes that the best way to start prevention of disease is by going out into the community and teaching society health ways of living. That being said, Shanup declares that he will devote his life to helping society learn the benefits of a healthy living.
